Dirty Electricity Filters

As more people become aware of the issue of dirty electricity, products to solve this problem are becoming more popular. I’ve been aware of the issue of dirty electricity for some time and have used my own experience to put together a list of the best dirty electricity filters.

So here are my 5 best dirty electricity filters:

  1. Greenwave Dirty Electricity Filter
  2. Stetzerizer Dirty Electricity Filter
  3. Satic Pure Power Plug
  4. Noxtak Dirty Electricity Filter
  5. Insteon Powerline Noise Filter

My top choice would probably have to be the Greenwave Dirty Electricity Filter because it’s produced by a market leader and so you can be confident it’ll get the job done properly. What’s more, you get enough in the pack to do plenty of rooms.

I’ll review these products in much more detail below, but first, it’s worth going over what dirty electricity is and why we should be concerned.

What is dirty electricity?

Dirty electricity is the term used to describe fluctuations in power supplies outside of the normal range of 50-60Hz. Dirty electricity is produced as a result of appliances needing a different current to that supplied by mains electricity, which produces “waste” power.

Although that sounds like it might be confusing, dirty electricity is a fairly easy concept to understand. Mains power works on a frequency of 50-60Hz and is alternating current.

In the past, electrical devices would just run on this power. However, modern devices often manipulate mains electricity to be more suitable for their needs. This could mean converting it into a direct current or a higher frequency alternating current.

For example, light dimmer switches produce dirty electricity by manipulating the voltage of the standard mains power. Other common sources of dirty electricity include:

  • TVs
  • Home theater systems or video games consoles
  • Cordless phones
  • Battery charging cables for mobile devices
  • Smart appliances

Some of these devices even turn their power supply on and off thousands of times a second to produce short bursts of power. Once created, dirty electricity makes its way back into the power supply and can affect other devices connected to it.

Why should we be concerned about dirty electricity?

Dirty electricity is a major source of EMF pollution in the home and is one that not many people are aware of. After all, why would you expect your electronic devices to not simply run on mains power?

Along with affecting appliances connected to mains power, dirty electricity can also lead to spikes and surges that can overpower some devices. It can also damage the wiring in your home, which can be an expensive problem to fix.

Then, of course, there are the health implications of EMF radiation. This can affect your sleep, your mental health, your appetite, it can produce skin rashes, and may even be linked to cancer.

Some people might not even be aware that dirty electricity is affecting their health because they’ve been living with the impacts for so long. Ideally, the first step should be to measure levels in your home and then to install dirty electricity filters.

The best dirty electricity filters

Dirty electricity filters do exactly what you think they would: they plug into your mains power and filter out the “noise” created by other devices. Most brands recommend one per room, but this obviously depends on the size of your room and the extent of the problem.

I’d recommend buying some kind of starter pack if possible and then deciding if you need more. Of course, this will be much easier to tell if you have some kind of dirty electricity meter.

1. Greenwave Dirty Electricity Filter

greenwave

Greenwave (check their website) is one of the industry leaders in dirty electricity filters, and it’s easy to see why when you look at their products. Many other companies base themselves on this design, so why look anywhere but the original?

Check out my detailed review.

Greenwave sells its filters in bundles, so you can buy as many as you need in one go. Each one works as a standard dirty electricity filter but also has a built-in socket on the bottom so you can continue to use the outlet as normal.

What’s more, they offer a handy guide for working out how many filters you’ll need in your home, and offer a discount the more you buy. These products are a great starting point if you’re new to the world of dirty electricity filters.

The only real downside of these is that they don’t contain other features, such as surge protection and power conditioning. So if you’re looking for this, then you’ll need to search for a different product. Otherwise, this will be a great choice.

2. Stetzerizer Dirty Electricity Filter

This model from Stetzerizer is another great starting point if you’re looking for a simple but effective dirty electricity filter for your home. They’re really easy to use; you just plug them in and let them do their job.

As with other products, it’s recommended to install one per circuit (or room), although larger spaces will need 2 or more. While the manufacturer doesn’t offer any specific guidance, one filter per 150 square feet of space will be fine.

One thing this model is missing, however, is an extra socket. This means that you won’t be able to continue using the outlet as normal once it’s plugged in. However, as it doesn’t contain its own power filter or surge protector, this isn’t a massive loss.

The bottom line is that this filter will be fine if you have a larger home or plenty of outlets. However, if you’re looking for a filter that does other jobs, or allows you to continue using the outlet, then you’ll need to look elsewhere.

3. Satic Pure Power Plug

There probably isn’t a better place to start than with the Satic Pure Power Plug. It plugs directly into a spare socket and gets to work filtering out the dirty electricity.

Not only that, but it also conditions every electrical device plugged into the same circuit. It also offers surge protection, EMF reduction, and voltage regulation. It’s designed for use at 120V and 60Hz.

As with all dirty electricity filters, the amount you’ll need will depend on the size of your home. I recommend one per room, to begin with, but you might need to increase this to 2 per room depending on its size and the number of appliances in it.

This filter is miles above the others because of all the extra benefits it offers. If you only want a dirty electricity filter, then look elsewhere, but this is a great all-rounder.

4. Noxtak Dirty Electricity Filter

This dirty electricity filter is a good choice if you’re particularly sensitive to EMF radiation as it offers more protection than a standard filter. It comes with a built-in nanomagnetic polarizing filter, which is designed to reduce EMF radiation in your home.

Perhaps one of the best features of this filter is that it has a plug socket built-in, meaning you can use it and not have to sacrifice a socket. I found this to be a massive help, particularly if your rooms are small and have fewer outlets.

It’s recommended to install 1 filter per 194 square feet of space. For example, a house with 800 square feet would need at least 4 filters installed. However, it’s best to check this using a meter to ensure you have enough.

Not only does this device filter out dirty electricity, but it also conditions the existing power to make it more efficient. It also has an added 15A surge protector, which is useful if you plan to plug a device into it.

5. Insteon Powerline Noise Filter

This filter is designed to work on powerline noise, of which dirty electricity is just one kind. In short, it’s designed to condition the power supply to your home, which makes everything more efficient and should reduce your energy bill.

A helpful feature of this product is that it comes with 2 power outlets, so not only does it allow you to continue using the socket, you also get a bonus socket as a result!

To make it even better, it comes with a 10A surge protector and filters the power that goes to the connected devices. This makes it practical for both protecting your electrical devices and conditioning the power in your home.

It’s best to plug these filters into your worst offending dirty electricity devices, such as TVs, Wi-Fi routers, and computers. Doing so will help to filter the dirty electricity at its source, making everything much more efficient.

Best dirty electricity meters

Dirty Electricity Meter

As I mentioned earlier, the best way to test whether you have dirty electricity in your home is to buy a dirty electricity meter. Other than trial and error, these are really the only way to know for sure.

Dirty electricity is more common in homes with a large number of problem devices, but as almost all of us will own a computer, TV, or hairdryer, it’s likely we’re all suffering from the problem to an extent.

In order to help you solve the problem in the most efficient way, I’ve also put together a list of the best dirty electricity meters. Buying one of these along with a pack of filters will allow you to manage the problem effectively.

1. Stetzerizer Microsurge Meter

This dirty electricity meter is really easy to use but doesn’t just have to be used in conjunction with Stetzerizer products. After all, it’s only designed to monitor levels of dirty electricity, so you can plug in whatever filters you want.

To use it, all you need to do is plug it into a wall outlet and it’ll give you readings of how much dirty electricity you have in your home. It completely ignores the standard 60Hz signal and so will only show you the information you need.

What’s more, it comes with all the necessary information on how to take readings, what these readings mean, and what your next steps are. Overall this is a great product that does exactly what you need it to.

2. TriField Dirty Electricity Meter

his is another dirty electricity meter that’s super easy to use. It comes with a standard 2-prong American power cord, which you simply plug into a socket to take readings.

It comes with a number of features to make your job much easier. It has a field strength bar that changes color when in the presence of high levels of dirty electricity. It also has a speaker that sounds when you’re near a source of dirty electricity.

Along with this is the digital screen that displays relevant information. All of this allows you to get a much more comprehensive perspective of the issue, including which outlets are most in need of a filter. Overall this is a great starting product.

3. Greenwave Dirty Electricity Meter

greenwave emi meter

The Greenwave meter (check their website) is another great product for starting out. It has a clear LED screen that makes readings really easy and a speaker that sounds when you’re near a high source of dirty electricity.

It works on a wide range of frequencies so you’ll be able to monitor even slight changes to your home’s electricity. What’s more, using this meter makes before and after comparisons really simple.

As with the other meters, all you need to do is plug it in to take readings. It displays the results in millivolts (mV), and states that any reading under 25 is fine, while anything over 50 requires action. This arguably makes it much simpler to use than the others.

Some final thoughts

Combating dirty electricity in your home is a project worth taking on. It’s not something many of us are aware of, but luckily it’s fairly easy to solve once you have the right equipment.

One of the most important things to remember is that you’ll need multiple dirty electricity filters throughout your home, so look out for brands that offer discounts on larger orders, as you might need a few!
